Abstracts- Evidence Of Adventures
These grid works originated with my visit to an abandoned Monastery in Arles, France, where the thick, stained glass window had been repaired so many times over many years that the lead grid was deformed, replacement glass colors did not quite match, and had aged differently. The variety spoke of a life of many changes, but still cohering.
The structure provided by imprecise rectangles, gives stability to support the tension of more free living color blocks and texture blocks. I hear that technique in works of Mark Rothko (1902-1970), Gerhard Richter and Jasper Johns, who also inspire me.
Blossoms, expecially the brilliant cherry, palo verde and apple tree blossoms, and of course the endemic cactus blossoms of Arizona escort spring and summer. I love painting the blossoming trees, with their sculptural trunks and branches, as a reminder that however grim the events of winter may be, spring will come with fresh hopes and new opportunities.
My paintings are clearly inspired by the British artist, Damien Hirst, and his monumental set of Cherry Blossom paintings during Covid.
